Literary Salon at a Hair Salon #outfromtheunderworld #memoir

OUT FROM THE UNDERWORLD BOOK AND MUSIC TOUR stopped at Inside Out Beauty Bar and Who Does Your Hair? Salon this month. This was a first: a literary salon at a hair salon!

What a fun night, and a great way to get the community of women-- mothers, daughters, friends and the like-- together for an evening of wine, great tunes and literature.

It was truly an evening of beautiful souls coming out to support a true, and oftentimes absurd story of heartbreak and inspiration described by one reader as "The Glass Castle of Long Island."

Synopsis: A basement apartment. An undertaker. Three resilient kids. The mysterious disappearance of their mother. Forty years later, one daughter tells the dark-- and absurd truth-- of what happened.

"This is what great books are made of."-- Sarah Cottrell   (READ THE FULL HUFFINGTON POST REVIEW HERE)

Bridal Glow with Dream Tint

From this day forward, lavish your skin with love.

Wedding season is here. It's time to get your skin in shape. Get the look you love with healthy makeup that leaves your skin clear, smooth and radiant. I suggest Jane Iredale's Dream Tint for a light, even coverage.

The model here is wearing Medium Light Dream Tint.

I was skeptical when Dr. Hoffman, our resident cosmetic enhancement physician, suggested I get an injection of Vitamin B12 this morning. Maybe this is because my New Chapter and Blue Bonnet Vitamins seem to make little difference in my life, other than turning my urine a strange color. Or because, though I spend hundred of dollars per year on supplements, deep down I am secretly old school in my thinking that vitamins and minerals are probably best ingested and absorbed from their plant-based sources, namely: food. Would an injectable of B12 really hold up to its claims? I perused her literature:

Benefits of  Vitamin B12 Injections

Increased Energy. By taking Vitamin B12 as an injection, the vitamin will be absorbed directly into your bloodstream. (As an oral supplement, it takes many hours to be absorbed by the gut and loses its potent energy value along the way).

Increased Metabolism. Vitamin B12 can increase metabolism,
which can help with weight loss.

Improved Mood.  Vitamin B12 is essential for the nervous system to work properly. When this system is not functioning properly depression can occur.

I had to admit, I'd been dragging lately, falling into the bad habit of a second cup of coffee in the afternoons to get me through the last hours of work, the car pools, the after school activities. And at $30 a shot-- a dose that is supposed to last for two weeks-- I really had little to lose.

And so, a swipe of rubbing alcohol, a prick of a 25 gauge needle, and a fun-filled moment as the red liquid disappeared into my deltoid, and... I felt nothing.

Dr Hoffman chuckled. "Let me know how you feel tomorrow," she said. "At the earliest you might feel a little more energized by tonight."

Sometime in the early evening, as I flitted back and forth past the television to pack my daughter's bag for dance- ballet and jazz shoes, bottle of water, bootie socks-- my daughter called out, "Mom, are you dancing?"

"Dancing? No, I'm just walking." But she noticed. And then I did. For the first time in a long time I wasn't dragging. I was bopping. With that little extra pep in my step.

Well, I'll be.

I'ts a small subtle difference, kind of like the difference between a crappy sleep and a good one, between a week of eating greens and sprouted grains versus too much red wine and chocolate, between exercising and sweating versus sitting like a couch potato. But I am liking very much this little extra kick of well being!

I'm definitely getting my second shot in two weeks, and thereafter, especially since Dr. Hoffman has a special: two shots per month for only $50.

Better to invest the money in myself than Starbucks.

Pink Pewter Headbands

Pink Pewter's gorgeous headbands are in stock at Inside Out Beauty Bar. Pink Pewter offers stunning high-fashion accessories that are fun, edgy, and suited for a range of looks to accentuate any outfit, or change it completely. A simple white t- shirt and jeans becomes an outfit with a Pink Pewter headband. I personally love
the Rockstar spikey-tipped headbands. Even though I don't feel cool enough to wear them, I still sometimes bluff anyway.

Jane Iredale's Glow Time BB Cream is pretty hard to beat. This creamy mineral makeup offers full coverage that conceals blemishes, minimizes pores, disguises wrinkles, and smooths and brightens the skin. It also offers a full-spectrum SPF of 25.

I like to play with two colors in the summer. I'm a "7" so I sometimes mix "7" and "9" to create a bronzed looked. Using "9", I contour under my cheekbones and create a "c" shape, contouring up the cheekbone and past my temples toward the outer edge of my forehead. Sometimes I just mix in a hint of "9" with "7" to give myself an overall tanned look. The feel of the makeup is light and velvety. Best of all, I love knowing I am putting something nourishing and non-toxic on my skin. See the tutorial below on how to apply for an even skin tone.

BB Cream is available at Inside Out Beauty Bar.
